About
Bal Matharu (PhDc) is a Chartered Physiotherapist with over 25+ years of clinical experience, a doctoral researcher specialising in breathwork and nervous system science, and a Scientific Board Member of the International Breathwork Foundation
Her work sits at the intersection of clinical medicine, lifestyle science, and human performance, helping individuals, organisations, and health systems move from dysfunction and burnout to sustained vitality and resilience
Through BODY | MIND IQ, Bal brings together evidence-based breathwork, nervous system regulation, and root cause medicine to address the underlying drivers of chronic stress, fatigue, inflammation, and dis-ease, not just managing the symptoms.
My Story, how it all started…
I began my career as a Chartered Physiotherapist in 2001 and went on to spend over two decades in the NHS, finishing at the height of my career as an Advanced Respiratory Specialist. During the COVID-19 pandemic, I worked on the front lines in ITU, surgical wards, and community settings, leading respiratory care for critically ill patients. That period of relentless pressure left me physically and emotionally depleted, yet it also became the turning point that reshaped my life’s work
I realised that while medicine can save lives in moments of crisis, true long-term health and vitality come from something deeper: how well our nervous system, body, and mind work together. This insight led me to retrain in Root Cause Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine, and today I am completing a Ph.D focused on the effects of breathwork on somatic symptom disorders, a field at the cutting edge of mind-body health.
As I deepened my study of Lifestyle Medicine, I began applying these principles to my own body. After more than 20 years on the highest dose of levothyroxine for hypothyroidism, I started exploring the connection between chronic stress, stored trauma, and metabolic dysfunction. By releasing old beliefs, emotional patterns, and unprocessed stress, and by integrating nervous system regulation, movement, and nourishment, I gradually restored balance. Today, I take no medication, and my thyroid function has returned to normal, healthy ranges
This lived experience has shaped everything I teach. Having witnessed the profound effects of this work on myself, my clients, and my own family, I now work with high-performing professionals, corporate teams, and health institutions to build the conditions for genuine, lasting wellbeing.
If something in this speaks to you, I invite you to reach out. This work has transformed my own health and relationships and it may just be the next step for yours.
